What to Wear for Professional Headshots: A Guide for Those Who Identify as Men

There is a myth that men have an easy time with headshots. They don’t stress, they know exactly what they want, and they don’t worry about what to wear. But I know the truth.

I’ve had clients tell me that getting a headshot is worse than going to the dentist. Worse than getting a cavity filled? That’s stressful! But I get it. Getting ready for a professional photo shoot can be overwhelming, regardless of what you do or how much experience you have. Maybe it’s that feeling of needing to be perfect. Or a fear of not being photogenic. Or not wanting to be the center of attention. Maybe it just brings back painful memories of bad school photos.

I’m here to relieve any anxiety about your professional photo shoot. I want to make sure you have a great experience and come away with a photo that you’re proud to use. One that captures your personality. No awkward smiles or weird poses at All About Headshots. I want you to have a photo you feel good about putting on your website, posting to LinkedIn, or having on a bulletin board at a conference. Your photo should project your confidence and approachability. That comes from being prepared for your time in front of the camera.

Let’s Get Ready for Your Headshot Photo Shoot

Every photo shoot includes a personal styling consultation prior to camera time. This Zoom meeting is a chance for us to get to know each other. What is important to you? How do you plan to use your professional headshot? Do you have any fears or concerns?  Don’t be afraid to tell me if you hate having your photo taken.

The big topic for discussion is what you will wear and bring on the day of the headshot photo session. I suggest multiple outfits to give us more options. Typically, we do a formal look, a casual look and something in between. Keep in mind there isn’t one best outfit for everyone. It really depends on your intent for the headshot, your profession, and your style. Many of my clients will wear different outfits for different use cases or personas.

What matters most? Fit! And no wrinkles! It’s like they say - bad data in, bad data out. The camera highlights seemingly small things you might not notice as much when you see someone in person. If the suit is too big, it will make you look bigger. A too-tight shirt can make you look uncomfortable. As for the wrinkles, you want people looking at your face not wondering where the iron went.

So what do you need? Here are some of the most common questions I get asked and some things to think about before we talk:

Do I Need to Bring a Suit to My Professional Photo Shoot, and if so, What Kind?

A suit is an obvious choice for a professional headshot, most often in black, blue, or some other dark color. But don’t limit yourself. Wear what makes you feel comfortable, what you feel great in and what represents you. If you typically wear lighter colors, bring those. If you’re edgy, go for a brighter color or a leather (or vegan leather) jacket.

What Shirts Should I Bring?

Again think of options. Formal, casual, and something in between.

A button down shirt - great with a jacket, leather jacket or on its own, with or without a tie. An example can be found in this headshot photoshoot.

Polo shirt - with a jacket or sweater or on its own.

Thin sweaters are great, too. And, half-zip tops are great, too, for a more casual look.

Avoid: wrinkles (as stated before) or anything worn out (even if it’s from your favorite concert).

What About Prints?

Do you love big bold prints? Do you wear them all the time? The right print can show your personality. But keep in mind that a bright and bold pattern can steal the attention away from the primary subject -- you. Still, if it’s a print you adore, there are ways to incorporate it without letting it overwhelm you. A bold print can be subdued just enough if worn under a jacket or sweater, for instance.

When you come in for the photo shoot, we’ll take a few test shots. That will help us to see how the pattern looks and will give us some ideas about how to use it best.

Do I Need a Tie?

Absolutely bring a tie if you normally wear one, especially if you work in a conservative profession. The color and style are up to you. Bring a few options and we’ll take some photos to see what looks best. We will do a mix of shots with and without a tie to give you options.

What About Jewelry and Other Accessories?

Regarding glasses - bring them all! We’ll try them with different outfits.

Jewelry and accessories like funky glasses can reveal personality. However, jewelry can be distracting. As with a bold print tie, these things tend to draw the viewer’s attention, taking away from your great smile. So, when deciding whether and what pieces of jewelry to wear, consider the image you want to portray.

What Colors Should I Wear?

There’s no one best color for everyone. Surprised? A lot of my clients are. Some say red is the power color or that dark colors project leadership skills, but what matters more is how the color looks on you and what makes you feel comfortable.

Color certainly has the power to evoke emotions and can be used to send certain messages, but when it comes to your photograph, what matters is that you look and feel great.

Often the colors you naturally gravitate toward are the ones that make you look best. We will talk in-depth during your style session about what will work best for you.

What Shoes Should I Wear?

Your shoes won’t show in the photography, but they still matter. I recommend footwear that is comfortable and supports your posture. Sneakers are great.

How Can I Make the Most of the Style Consultation?

This is meant to be a casual conversation to prepare us both for a fun and relaxing photo shoot. Come with questions and have the clothes you’re thinking of on hand. Most of my clients try on their clothes for me. We’ll review what will work and what you might need. You wouldn’t be the first person to buy a new suit for a photo, but often what you have already is good. What’s most important is that you feel at ease and confident that we’re going to get photos where your character shines through.

What Else Should I Know for the Photo Session?

Have fun! We’re going to capture the real you. I want you to enjoy your session and love your photos.
