A New Headshot Reveals Inner Strength for Cancer Survivor
Recently, at a New York-based professional speaker’s event, I met Sandra, a cybersecurity executive interested in getting a new headshot. As I prepped Sandra, she let me know that the headshot she had been using for the past 10 years no longer represented how she looked. Her hair was shorter now, not by choice but because of the treatments she went through over the past 6 months after her cancer diagnosis.
“Going through chemotherapy can be a challenging journey, and hair loss is often one of the most visible and emotionally taxing side effects. While it's important to remember that hair loss is temporary and a sign that the treatment is working, it is a harsh reality for the patient and the way they see themselves. I felt that way.
I wore a nicely fitted wig, a similar length and style to my former hair, for months until my hair had grown back enough to style it. I wasn’t even sure how to work with the new curls or what style would look best. When I returned to work that first Monday without the wig, I was not recognized by so many of my colleagues. In fact, someone I had been working with frequently over the past nine months came up to me after a meeting and asked who I was. It was a very vulnerable time for me personally and professionally.

During my headshot session, she made me feel so comfortable. When she showed me the prints of my photo shoot, I couldn’t help but smile. I told Alissa how good it felt to show the world my new look, one that represented the woman I am today – stronger and ready to take on the next challenge.”
